A Brief Social History of Tuberculosis.
Seminar - Diseases, Health, and Wellbeing Series
In collaboraDon with the InternaDonal Center for Drug Policy Studies (ICDPS), the Research
Centre for Health and Wellbeing of the College of Liberal Arts, organised the seminar on A
Brief Social History of Tuberculosis on August 09, 2023. This is the first among many
seminars to come under the Diseases, Health, and Wellbeing seminar series, which will be in
collaboraDon with scholars and policymakers from Europe, North America, Africa, LaDn
America, Australia, the Middle East and Asia.
This seminar had Dr Niels Brimnes from Arhus University, Denmark, Dr Paul Mason from
Macquarie University, Australia, and Professor Shahaduz Zaman, Brighton Sussex Medical
School, UK. Dr Arnab Chakraborty, a postdoctoral student of the College of Liberal Arts, who
study the history of Tuberculosis in the Philippines and Fiji took the lead in organising this
seminar.
The seminar was a[ended by scholars and students from Shanghai University, Peking
University, East China University of Science and Technology, Fudan University, Shandong
University of TradiDonal Chinese Medicine, Renmin University of China, and Chinese
Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. The discussion in the seminar shaped the ideas and
thoughts, which will help finalising the book on A Brief History of Tuberculosis, which will be
published with Routledge, UK in 2024.

Climate Change, Disasters, and Health Risks
Seminar - Diseases, Health, and Wellbeing Series
In collaboration with the International Center for Drug Policy Studies (ICDPS), the Research Centre for Health and Wellbeing of the College of Liberal Arts, organized the second seminar of the Diseases, Health, and Wellbeing Series on the subject of climate change, disasters, and health risks on October 25, 2023. This seminar series is strengthened by the partnerships from universities in the UK, Denmark, Australia, India, and many other countries across the world.
The seminar on climate change, disasters, and health risks had Professor Karl Atkin from University of York, UK, Dr Idelia Ferdinand from the Government of St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Dr Devendraraj Madhanagopal from XIM University, Odisha, India. Based on the existing research on climate change, disasters, and health risks, this seminar will publish a book edited by Professor Janaka Jayawickrama, Dr Arnab Chakraborty, and Professor Yong-an Zhang of the College of Liberal Arts (Routledge, UK).
The seminar was attended by scholars and students from Shanghai University, Fudan University, Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Yunnan University, and China Agricultural University. The discussions in the seminar shaped the ideas, which will contribute to the Shanghai University’s contribution to the global discourse on climate change, disasters, and health risks.

Climate change and Health in Fiji: A contemporary analysis

Associate Professor Mumtaz Alam from Fiji National University visited the College of Liberal Arts, Shanghai University in June 2024. He presented his research work on Climate change and health in post-colonial Fiji.

Professor Karl Atkin, a medical sociologist from University of York, UK will be visiting the College of Liberal Arts of Shanghai University in June 2024. He is collaborating with the Centre for Health and Wellbeing on various research projects. During his visit, he will conduct a seminar on Climate Change, Environment, and Health Inequalities in the UK.Presentation on mental health of women in urban slums and internal migration and culture in Bangladesh.

Professor Din Mohammad from Media Studies and Journalism at the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB), and also a collaborator of the Centre for Health and Wellbeing will be visiting the College of Liberal Arts of Shanghai University in May 2024. He will be presenting his research work on mental health of women in urban slums and internal migration and culture in Bangladesh.
